It’s the Final Countdown

Today is the last day of my week off from school. When I go back to school tomorrow, there will be about two months until I get out of school on 23 April, and another month of exams until I graduate around the same time in May. How did that happen? How did my last year of high school just fly by like that?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m actually glad that it did. I wanted my junior year (last year) to pass as slowly as possible, because most of my friends were graduating at the end of that year, but now that it’s my last year and so many of my friends are gone, I just can’t wait for it to be over.

It just hit me yesterday that I need to start thinking about things like prom and graduation. My mom made a hair appointment for me on 21 March, which is fine because I usually just get hair cuts when I feel like it, and I don’t get them often. My last one was probably back in November or December. However, I realized that a little under five weeks after that hair appointment is prom. I think prom is on 27 April. That means I’ll probably have to get another haircut just before prom, and another again in a month for graduation. Suddenly I have to plan my haircuts around these events, and it makes them seem so near. I guess they are; it’s surreal.

Due to this, I’ve suddenly begun to worry about finding a dress for prom. Right now, I really can’t be bothered to look for a prom dress, and I definitely can’t be bothered to pay for one! I am accustomed to going through life by taking one thing at a time and not really planning ahead. I know I can’t wait ’til the last minute to get a prom dress though, or they will all be picked over. I’m just not mentally ready to start looking yet.

When I think about that, it makes me not really want to go to prom. I think as a senior I’m expected to go, but I’m not sure if I want to live up to that expectation. It’s just another dance. It’s a more expensive, fancier dance, but it’s just another dance. I don’t even like dances that much, and why should I pay somewhere around $100 for a dress that I will only wear once? It’s not like it’s a wedding dress. I would go all out for something like that. It’s only prom.

I just looked up prom on Wikipedia, and the page reminded me of corsages. That’s another thing about prom, the girls are expected to give their dates boutonnieres to wear on their lapels, and in return they receive corsages. Why? The guys take off their jackets once they go into the dance hall anyway, and I personally really dislike corsages. I don’t understand the concept of wearing a flower on your wrist. I’ve worn corsages before in other, non-dance environments, and I find them extremely uncomfortable, not to mention unwieldy. Why am I expected to wear a corsage? Why am I expected to even GO TO PROM? Why is there such social stigma surrounding it?

For some reason, it actually brings me near tears thinking about it all. Maybe it’s the fact that high school is coming to an end, but I think it’s just prom. As of tonight, I don’t want to go.

Prom sucks. :P Of course in Australia it doesn’t really follow the Americanised tradition, I guess. We don’t have those corsages and to be honest, I think they sound really tacky.

But prom is such a social thing; I was going to not go to mine at all. But I wanted to actually dress up for the fun of it, even if I did not like preparing. It’s the way it is, I guess. I was even going to wear jeans to mine, just to protest. :|

I think you should go. You don’t have to make a big deal about the dressing up but it’s probably one of the last times you’ll see your classmates all together (assuming they’re all going, of course). It’s supposed to be enjoyable. But at the same time you have to be yourself. Dressing up is fun but make sure you get a dress that makes you feel special as yourself. ;) I know that sounded corny. :P

You should be glad it’s over though. :D High school is another milestone! :D

As for hair.. haha. I only get mine cut every six months! I don’t get mine trimmed or anything so I’m guessing yours is already in better condition and shape than mine. :) I guess we’ll have to see how it turns out from your next appointment until prom.

Prom is a day for everyone to feel special! :P

Sorry for the excessive :P and shitty comment. xP xP

  2. Erin says:

I have heard different things about Prom. That it sucks and that it is really good. I only have 3 chances to go to prom so I am going at least once. I don’t wanna miss out on my chance and regret it. :/

I tend to always plan ahead, like I’m planning my wedding, like what dress I want to wear, where I want to have it, who I am going to marry, what is he going to wear. Not all of the little details, that’s for the day. Hahaha. :) I like planning ahead though. I like lists too. I am such a list-maker it is ridiculous.

I’m in my junior year and I am proud to be a junior but I want to leave this effing school so badly. I hate it. I mean no one here likes it. It is stupid and has too many rules. :/

Yeah, that’s why I’m not adding reads or tutorials yet. I want to see how my resources go first. :)

Look at my website now. I added the layout. Like it?

  3. Isa says:

We don’t call prom “prom”, just a graduation dance and its special for us because most people only have one in their lifetime or two if they’re lucky.
There isn’t as much social pressure around it as in other places, it just a night to have with everyone, whether they were your friends or not. Everyone dressed up and some people did their hair all fancy, most bought their dresses days before graduation so there isn’t much of that big fancy preparation. A lot people didn’t come with dates so we were all rocking it out with any and everyone on the dance floor. It all passed too quickly and its sad that for my next dance my closest friends won’t be present :(

I think prom is what you make it you know? Don’t follow standards or submit to social pressure. Be yourself and go being happy the way you are. I always thought prom being this one final huzzah (wth?) with your classmates and friends, just a time to have fun and enjoy yourselves. You dress up a little, wear what you feel confident in and make it a good experience. Don’t stress yourself out with preparations.

Ugh I realize that my comment kinda screams “Go to your prom” sorry about that x_x I just remembered my friend not wanting to go to prom at all and we begged till she came, it ended up being one of the best night of her life. Even I didn’t think it would be that great, like I said its what you make it to be.

Oh and that’s quite a few haircuts you would be getting D: I just cut my own hair xD

  4. Isa says:

Okay you can delete this comment, I just realized I put my fanlisting url instead of my blog. Its http://lollibean.net in case you want to virtually bitch slap me for that long comment  x3

  5. Georgina says:

    YOU MUST GO! (BTW.)

I have a question though; do you guys get to take any partner? Because we weren’t allowed. They had to be from our grade. :| Good thing I had James for my year 12 one… :P

I bought my dresses from Indonesia because they were cheaper. I hope you find one! I was going to make one and get my aunt to help me but didn’t have enough time.

A stubborn winner? LOL! But getting comments is such a pain sometimes. :( I’m glad you have caught up though. We both know it feels good to do so. I’m glad I’ve at least done the ones on my previous blog.

As for me, I have about 40 to return. A little less maybe.

Yeah, I did call! Blast. Anyway you know what happened. It fluctuated a bit this evening too. :| I really want it to stop because it gives me a heart attack every time I see my credit change.

I guess it’s not about the money, and my mum says that too. It’s about how annoying it is and how it could happen again. Which… well… it kind of is about the money.

But it’s so inconvenient. I just want it to end. Blahh.

Yeah, that’s fair, but it’s not fair on my end. I always have to go with my dad because my brother is lazy and my mum doesn’t want to rage at him. And she doesn’t go herself… ugh. I know it’s not a must to go to church and some people don’t when they are a Catholic/Christian. But it’s not fair that I have to. ;|

Oh yes, the client. :@ Wow though… him making those kinds of comments? I guess you should be ticked off but woah. He seems like a creep as well as stupid – like you said. Stupid creep client indeed. The poor kid! I hope he isn’t exposed to too much of his mum and dad yelling at each other!

Ugh. D: I actually have never spoken up to my mum but every time she mentions something about religion and believing in God in a general sense, I drop a hint about how not everyone believes in him. I don’t feel comfortable when she says “God is fair”. I’d rather she say “things happen for a reason”, as much as I hate that quote. I know she believes in God but when I think about her not going to church because she’s “tired”, yet she wants the rest of us to go… :( Sucks! I shouldn’t snap at her though, but it doesn’t seem fair from my point of view.

I guess it’s just being exposed to other religions and learning things throughout life that give me a different perspective. It sucks! I wish I could be every religion on the planet sometimes. That’s how much it makes me curious and makes me feel like stepping out.

    I just noticed you wrote “G-d”. ;)

jsngdltnhstn. :( It’s sad to hear about your parents. My parents fight so badly sometimes, sometimes I think they’re just sticking together for “family’s” sake. But I know that despite the shitty crap that happens, I know that they wouldn’t be able to live without each other. It sounds a little sick, like they’re hanging on for dear life. I hate to think of it as a sweet thing though. :|

    /huuuuuuug <3<3<3<3

  6. TJ says:

I think you should go to prom, well depending on how popular it is in your area. I know here, a lot of girls and guys like to go. I think it’s more of a remembrance of high school (almost like what you said). I know prom can be a lot of money, but just go with your girlfriends lol, screw the dates and just have fun:) lol like it’s your senior year too. haha I know if i dont go to something like this, i might later regret it, also if you really HATE IT, then you can leave:) lol

anywayy i want to leave hs. My senior friends are all like “no, enjoy being a sophomore, Just enjoy it” but i dont want/cant. idk i think i just want to know my college and my future. i guess im more of a planner then you, but i dont really plan that far ahead, i just think about it lol.

ohh your more of a designer then a blogger?! haha i guess im more of idk the friends aspect? haha thats why i am on, and dont like going on as much, cause most of my “friends” aren;t involved anymore haha. I guess i do like PS, but i gotta be in the mood lol. idk i like both haha i like talking to people:)

haha i was looking at my past layouts, and was like whoaaa, haha. i pretty much do what i want. i dont care what people think of my site. Like it’s MY sight, not theirs.. so yea haha maybe my next one will be blinding haha, who knows.

haha im not that confident, i think people online think i am some confident person lol. i totally am not. haha but i am tryign to sstay positive:)) haha like i like how my hair looks today.YAY for positive step foward lol.

  7. Laurie says:

Rachel! I love your blogs! I’m glad you have time to blog more. :)
But anyways, this year has gone by really fast! I’m going to be a junior next year and you’re going to be a freshman in college! We have to still keep in touch though and it would be great if you keep on blogging! (:

I made a Deviant Art, I was wondering if you had one? :)

Also, I’m not big into dances either. All my friends are but was never a big party-er like my dad. My sister is a big party-er though!

I think I might go to prom with some friends or something. Cause the after-party and prom is a really big deal at my school.

But you should go with your friends! And if you have another dress you want to wear, you can just wear that! Or you can wear your prom dress after the prom? I think you should go but don’t worry about it. :)

The rest of this year is going to be so much fun for you!

    • Rachel says:

Thank you! I’m glad too. :)

Yep, it really has gone by quickly.

No, I don’t have one. Sorry. What kind of art do you post on your dA account? Writing?

Lol, you mean *partier. If it was a word, that would be how you spell it.

Haha dude, I only own one nice dress, and I’ve already worn it to two dances. I need a new one for prom.

  8. Cappy says:

Well ya see.. My prom is in ages, but I CAN give you some advice. If you really want to go then go. If you can wait for Senior Year, then go Senior Year, so you’ll have some fun in your last year of High School rather than waste it all in your Junior Year. Since I’m not particularly an “OMG FLOWERS AND PINK” girl, I probably wouldn’t wear a corasage… Especially if it were to bother me for the whole night. >.< Unless it was a REALLY pretty flower & someone forced me to wear it, or else I'll be thrown in a pit of molten lava.

Thanks for the toutorial… now how to let Zymic log me back in. I'll figure that out sooner or later. I just want a layout that'll stay with me for a while and is my own creation and just blog. I don't really wanna argue with my computer for days. I just wanna blog. It's FUN! :3

  9. Cappy says:

Wait. EEP! You’re graduating in MAY! Then go, it’s your last experience of High School. (PSST: you can re-sell the dress or give it away)

    • Rachel says:

I don’t know if my comment posted to your website. It either posted like five times or not at all. Here it is again if it didn’t go through.

Actually, I am in my senior year right now, which is why I have such a dilemma about if I want to go to prom or not, since it IS my last and only chance to go.

Good luck figuring out the layout! I agree, blogging is fun. :) I’m glad you haven’t let a malfunctioning layout stop your blogging.

OH I just noticed your other comment. Yeah, I’m graduating in May. Like you said, it is one of my last high school experiences, which is why I’m so torn about whether I want to go! D: I bet I’ll end up going.

Aww, enjoy your break! We all need a break sometime. :) I see your break will be filled with work on a new website though. That’s always fun. :D Good luck with starting fresh as well as thinking of a new name that you really love and that you won’t get tired of.

      What’s a TOC?

  10. Simone says:

Awh, your graduating soon! I bet it must feel like an accomplishment. High school is passing like right before my eyes. I’m only a sophmore but the school year is almost over and it seems like just yesterday I was entering as a freshman.

PROM! I can’t wait until I go, I want to go before my time though and I think I actually will but only time will tell. I never really understood the whole corsage thing but I guess it’s just tradition but that doesn’t mean you have to follow it.

Your expected to go to prom because of course you’re a senior and prom is like every girl’s dream, her mother’s too. You don’t have to go but if you don’t just make sure you don’t regret it. I bet if your friends wouldn’t have graduated with you then you’d be much more excited seeing that since they have already graduated you can’t wait until high school is over.

  11. Gillan says:

Time did fly. I’m getting my summer vacation this April :D
Lol, i get haircuts when i feel like it too. I’m excited to be a junior :) Because then, there will be prom XD I’m excited to attend Prom because well.. the juniors and seniors got me excited about it XD
You must pick/buy a gown ahead of time or else you might not like what is the only stock in stores :/
I’ve wore corsage before but i was only little and i don’t really mind things around me XD
I’m sure it’s just the Prom :) I’m glad that you’re not worrying about high school coming to an end, because if i were you, i would be. I’m just sad imagining missing my old pals, that’s all :)

  12. Kayt says:

lmao thanks, and yes, I am old now :( .
well thats good. It’s weird, cause I always have to have some one here, well did, since I was alone for most of the time when Alban was here; but with my ex bf, I could go to his house whether his mom was home or not lol.
so true, I took him to my room anyway, and he slept in my room the 2nd night lol. Cause we were watching movies and it was late so he just went to sleep :P
haha I know, I wonder what their going to do or say when I do move out and he comes and spends more time with me- well actually, theres nothing they can do :)

your last year usually seems to go by so fast- for me it was fast as well. which was good, because like you, most of my friends had graduated.
a hair cut sounds good right about now.. I don’t get mine cut often either, but I really need one :/
prom can be very expensive, and I don’t get why. Ya it’s your last year and one of the last dance things, but why is there so much hype about it? I don’t get it lol. I never went to mine, its all drama. People fighting, people crying.. whats the point of spending hundreds of dollars for it to just turn to crap, or maybe tht was just the school i went to lol. Good luck with finding a dress! I hate those flower things as well ,seems pointless and just another thing to waste money on :P

  13. Lady Impulse says:

I for one, loved my prom and I didn’t expect to, so you never know. Have fun!

  14. Patricia says:

I haven’t had prom yet, lol
But, i need the image accounts for my fansites, so I can get HQ pictures and Photoshoots without it being illegal.
I like to get a lot because I love trading them, lol

  15. Nancy says:

Ahh! Final countdown until the end of the school year. I always have senior friends. I somehow, hate it whenever it`s the end of the school year. Seniors graduate, they leave. It makes, socializing, well. Limited, until you find the freshmeat. Or more juniors that becomes seniors, then deja vu. After that, then it`s your turn.
I`ll need to find a combo CD/DVD drive then! I wouldn`t mind using my laptop. Lucky you! May I ask, which phone company do you use? I`m always curious on these small little things.
Drafting class is alright, I find a lot of interest in it because it`s once a week and I guess, this is what I want to somewhat major in.
Prom! I got asked to prom this year. By one of my friends that goes to another school. I`m just a sophomore :/. I don`t really mind going, since I already have a couple of dresses I could use for prom, since I guess I always prepare way too early. Hope you`ll find what you need& have a great haircut ;D

  16. Erin says:

Yeah, same here. This year’s prom theme is gay. I forgot what it was exactly but I know that it was stupid. :/

We actually have 2 chances. I think you read what I wrote wrong. Lol. We have 4 chances for Homecoming and 2 for Prom and a few for our vDay dance if they decide to have one. This year they didn’t decide to have one.

I would like pictures inside and outside, inside if it is raining then outside if it isn’t. :)

I plan it with Dante. I love him so much! I really do think that we will eventually get married. :)

Same here. I can easily remember what I need (i will forget otherwise) and I can have a satisfaction of completing it. :)

    Soon enough. :)

What do you think could be better about it? Hey, why don’t you just review my site. :) That way I can get your whole opinion. :P Can I sign up via comment?

    Thanks!

    I will. :P

  17. Amanda says:

Haha yeah, it’s tough, especially with school any everything. It just gets in the way, and sometimes you just want to do something else XD

You are right. Middle school was such a big change, not the classes, the people. That’s where I saw who were my real friends. The other ones, just kind of faded away. My sister didn’t find any like problems with high school, to her, it was just a new school, but with all of her friends. I hope my experience turns out the same as both of yours.

Oh, well here, there is 7 elementary schools, 1 middle school and 1 high school, but there is always people just coming it from private schools or who just move here over the summer. Especially since people find it a good time to move after their child graduates. I guess it makes sense though.

Yeah, I mean, I don’t stress over it too much, but when I’m bored, it kind of just pops into my mind. I do have a lot of time, and if I do it a little bit at a time, it’s not as overwhelming. And yeah, my counselor will help me too.

Aww, yeah, I went back to school this week as well. It was tough the first day. Getting up early, and just being in the routine again. Haha, the school year is flying by! Whoa! You’re prom is pretty early compared to my local high school. I remember watching my sister go to prom, it was so weird because there were so many people in my house. All of her friends all went together, and 2. She was wearing a dress. Like an actual dress dress! I was like WHOA. Hah, but she had a blast. I’m sure you’ll have a great time! My sister felt the same way as you do. She wasn’t into getting a dress she was going to pay once, especially when the money could very well go into college funds. She decided though, she didn’t want to miss the opportunity. Her friend didn’t go, and everyone always asks him why he didn’t go and how he should’ve. Because it was really a night to remember. My sister loved prom because it was a night all to herself and with her friends. And for the corsages, you don’t have to get one for someone. My sister just went with her friends, and not with a date, and my mom just got a corsage for her ;D No big deal (:

  18. Joyce says:

I couldn’t disagree with you more about your senior year flying by! I felt like my senior year was so dragged out and unnecessarily long. I felt like time went by in microwave-minutes than regular minutes.

What’s your size? You can just have my prom dress, lol. It only cost me $30 so I’m not attached to it. It’s black and white. I’ll take a picture of it for you. I can just ship it to you and you will look all pretty with Jimmy and YAY (: Do you go to school with Jimmy ?

Oh man.. now I’m getting nostalgic. The tail end of senior year was sort of hectic. There was prom, graduation, prepping for college, wrapping up all my school activities.. and being part of student council didn’t make it any easier !

I hope you have fun with all your last senior year activities. Is the location of your prom a really nice place? Mine was at some country club =/

Your vision of prom is the same as mine. Harry didn’t go to prom either, and I didn’t want our kids to look at us years from now and be like, “so, neither of you went to prom ..losers.” LOL. I thought it was a waste of money. I didn’t even dance at all at my prom.. but that’s because Harry doesn’t dance and all the other people at my school dance like they wanna have sex right then and there so =/

I think you will have a great time though! It’s a landmark of your high school experience (:

    ————

    ); Rach help me then !!! I don’t know how to fix my navigation. Without it being in a horizontal position in black, my layout looks like it has no flow and structure. I did originally have it semantically with translucent backgrounds on top of my header image . . . but I’m not so sure );

I love Papyrus ! Lol. I think it’s very unique looking. Thank you so much! Not to sound all mushy or anything, but your opinion means a lot to me when it comes to design. I know it’s something you’re passionate about and have experience in, so yay (:

Oh my gosh you put that perfectly!
“…one of those episodes where I kind of don’t like knowing what happens next, and it gets a bit uncomfortable to watch.”
    I feel that way with quite a few episodes, actually. This time around watching the season DVDs, I actually watched the episode where Ross and Rachel break up. I always, always skip over that one because I don’t like it );

The way I feel about the series finale of Friends is a huge paradox. I think it was done very well as a happily-ever-after, simple and sweet episode where everything falls into place for everybody. But then again I feel like there should have been something more dramatic and compelling.

I barely survived my night class. I thought I was going to die of boredom. Kind of like how Phoebe thought she was going to die when Ross was telling them a boring dinosaur story (:

  19. AnneMarie says:

Dances. Last year, they seemed like such a big deal for me. As a frosh, the upper classman advertised it like it was a big deal. After awhile, the hype died down and this year I only went to one of the formaler dances. I don’t know if I want to go to Prom next year (Juniors and Seniors can). As you said it is more expensive. I don’t like corsages very much, I do like getting them but when on the dance floor, often they fall apart because I dance like mad. :P

But really, I think it’s just nice the entire thing. I’m not into it as much but I realize that one day I’ll look back and be like, I didn’t go to the dances, how sad. Or what DID I do back then? So I wanted to go to a few, for the memories and such (:
    ———————-

    I love choir concerts (:

    It was a serious/funny rap.

“The song I sing is why I am the king, the king of everything I see I sing in the key of me, my own original words are like birds on the wing, blue sky-ing, high fly-ing, swinging through the world like pearls on a string, my perfect sing-song thing of everything, oh this is the song, sing-a-long, sing-a-long, with the song I sing”

Thanks for all the luck, I think I’ll always need good wishes and prayers of that sort. Life is so hectic, your thoughts are probably what get me through.

Being hypnotized is very relaxing :D I’ll post it on Youtube one day. I’ve been busy still :P

    ————

I completely understand that it’s hard for you to wrap your head around that (the kuya being bi.. thing). It’s difficult for me too, especially since well we’re friends. And I don’t think it’s actually hit me completely yet. I’m still waiting for the impact but I think I’m not ready for it.

Kuya’s just so “in love” “head over heels” “blinded by love” that I tend to feel replaced. Because often, when Joe steps into the room, it’s all Kuya seems to notice. Often, I talk to him and then Joe steps in and I’m left talking to myself. Sometimes, I’m just completely ignored as if I don’t exist. It’s all rather selfish, and I don’t think Kuya notices since he’s so “obsessed” as he had put it.

Things are okay, they’re just different and as I said, I’ve had difficulty wrapping my mind around it.

  20. tiff k says:

*hugz* aww dear!! I know how you feel… that’s how I felt during my last year in high school… High school is definitely different and is the place I had my happiest and saddest moments.

Being a senior is expensive too, because of the preparation for everything and of course the prom. Because I studied at a conservative Catholic school, they disapproved of “pairing” (no boyfriends, girlfriends! of course some people get away with it) so they have this junior senior prom where the teachers PICK who your partner is according to height. 4th yr girls go with 3rd year guys and 4th year guys go with 4rd year girls. It’s really funny! XD hahaa But at least everyone has a partner and because usually there are less guys, some guys had 2 partners XD hahaha!!

But it was fun, don’t get me wrong, prom was fun especially the dancing part (after the whole program and all) and despite being “arranged”, if you have an awesome prom partner (by chance), the night will be memorable! And plus it’s a chance to see all of you dressed in something other than being in a uniform all year long (well we had uniforms XD).

I hope your prom will be good though dear, hope that you’ll cheer up!! *hugz*

  21. TJ says:

YES, don’t conform haha. I think i will probably go, cause i like parties and so does my friends lol. So that is us, but yea lol i dont really know your situation so whatever floats your boat thats good. Maybe your boyfriend and you can go somewhere fun instead?! lol Plan other ideas:)

and yea idk why they think that being a sophomore is awesome. It’s so much work:( like i am trying to think about what classes i should take so colleges will take me. and yea SAT stuff soon… and NHS, i want to make it. blah im on the like borderline, that actually has been stressing me out, way more then it should.

and i think about “my future” cause i try to live with no regrets, and so far it has been working. And i like thinking about my future, like “i wonder how i will be then” idk i feel like 20′s will be better, cause i will be doing what i want, you know? well i hope. mhm i use to want to be a teenager when i was like 6, but yea haha. It feels like forever ago since I had my prom. It was almost 5 years ago! I remember at the time, I felt very pressured as a lot of my friends were bringing dates and I didn’t have one. But in the end, I had a lot of fun just hanging out with my friends who didn’t spend all their time with their dates, which was nice ^^ I noticed that not many girls were wearing corsages but there was one girl who wore this totally outrageous corsage and I was glad I didn’t bring a date along!

I usually plan my haircuts around events as well! But a year or two ago, my uncle was due to receive an award at Buckingham palace, so I went to get a haircut for the occasion. Turns out the salon only had an appointment for the day before the occasion and I ended up getting a really bad haircut! From then on, I decided to leave a few days after getting a haircut in order to be able to sort it out!
