How to Choose a Tutorial’s Topic

In your neverending quest to fill your site with exciting new content, there is almost no doubt that you will at some point turn to writing nice, helpful tutorials for others. However, it is easy to stumble upon a mental block when trying to decide what to write. The following are some simple steps/tips to help you get past this block.

First, decide for what you want to write tutorials, in general. Maybe you want to write about how to do something in a graphics-making program, such as Adobe Photoshop, Gimp, etc, or maybe you want to write a tutorial about coding.

Now that you know in what area you want to write, it is time to decide what specifically you want to teach. This can be the most challenging part, and the most obvious mental roadblock, because you don’t want your tutorials to be so elementary that they are not useful to anyone. However, it is important to remember that many of the people who will view your tutorials will be looking at them because they are not experienced, and want to learn something new! Therefore, you must re-evaluate what you think is elementary. Think back to when you were first learning about the general topic of your tutorial (eg: Photoshop), and try to remember what things you were the most excited to learn, or about what you had difficulty finding a tutorial. These things make great topics for tutorials, even if they now seem very easy and obvious. Since inexperienced-you from the past would have liked to read tutorials about them, currently inexperienced people may like to as well! Thus, there is no need to stress over trying to find a complex enough topic about which to compose a tutorial, and you can be writing them in no time!
