What I Mean

As many of you probably know, I am one of those people who is all for the preservation of the English language. I’m a grammar freak, and I hate it when other people use bad grammar, especially in writing. I don’t like to use the term “grammar Nazi”, being Jewish and all, but I guess you could say that’s what I am.

Because of this, there are at least a few things about current slang that bother me. What gets me the most right now is the use of the word “legit”. Legit is an abbreviation of the word “legitimate” or “legitimately”, and when used correctly, I really don’t mind it. For example, “I legit failed my test” is perfectly fine. You legitimately failed your test, which is grammatically correct, as well as logical.

However, some people use “legit” in the weirdest ways. One day at lunch when my friend Jenny was talking about her parents, she said “my parents are so legit”. Okay…? So your parents are legitimate. I would hope so. I would hope they are legitimately your parents, and it would be nice if they weren’t illegitimate bastard children either. What she meant to say was something along the lines of that her parents are cool. What the heck?

As you probably know, she’s not the only one. So many people use “legit” in that way. It’s really strange to me. I don’t know how people can think that the use of that word in that context actually makes SENSE. It doesn’t. Go ahead and look it up if you’re doubtful.

On that note, I don’t understand the phrases “hot mess” or “hot damn” either. I don’t have anything against them grammatically, or really at all, but I just don’t understand them. What qualifies a “hot” mess? What’s the difference between saying “you’re a mess” and “you’re a hot mess”? If someone could help me out here, that would be great. The same goes for “hot damn”. Is there some sort of distinction between when “hot damn” is a correct exclamation in place of “damn”, and when it is not? O.o Help me out here. D:

Speaking of helping out, I have to get up early tomorrow morning to help at the Purim carnival at my temple. =/ It’s early for a Sunday anyway; I have to be there at 8:00am and stay until it ends at around 3:00pm. That’s ten minutes longer than one of my school days, which go from 7:45am to 2:35pm.

What makes me angry about that is that I’m the one who volunteered. The carnival is run entirely by volunteers, and people offer their time to help make it a success. I don’t think the people in charge of the carnival should really be telling the volunteers that they “have to be there from eight to three”. They should be asking the volunteers when they are available, perhaps suggesting times during which they need the most help. Instead, this is what they said: “If you’re volunteering, you have to be there for both shifts, unless you have a conflict. If you have a conflict, you need to be there for at least one shift, and you have to let us know.” That just seems wrong to me. I’m glad to help out, but I’d like not to be told when I “must” be there as if it’s a paid job or something. If I didn’t need community service hours for NHS, I would make up some excuse so I would only have to work one shift. Actually, I wouldn’t have even volunteered at all.

At least I get a free t-shirt for helping. :P

Sad to say, but the English language is being butchered – hacked apart piece by piece with every stupid slang term that makes absolutely no sense. *rolls eyes* To be fair I don’t hear the people I know say “legit” much in the way you described, but there are plenty of other similar expressions that people use incorrectly that drive me insane. Reminds me actually of Ted berating Robin for constantly using the word “literally” in the wrong context on How I met your mother, lol. And don’t get me started on the abomination that is saying “should of” instead of “should’ve”! -_-

I had to look at that Wikipedia article because I didn’t know what Purim was, but it sounds very interesting. :) Actually a lot of the Jewish holidays I’ve read about sound interesting – Christian holidays are so boring and low-key in comparison, save Christmas and Easter. Though admittedly my family doesn’t celebrate Christian holidays either, just the ones that have become somewhat secular. :P Anyway, I hope you have fun at the carnival, though I agree that they shouldn’t be so strict and demanding about the hours when you’re volunteering for free. :(

Anyway, love the site, take care!

ROFLMAO. Oh god. As if your blog didn’t make me laugh enough, you even had appropriate tags. x3

You actually told me about your friend saying her parents were legit. Well… of course, right? Normally that goes without saying, unless it comes up in a conversation about nasty parents adopting out their children or being whores. Hmm.

Some people use words in the weirdest ways. I think I’ve been in the wrong sometimes (I kept writing “admittently” instead of “admittedly” until some cockface told me I was wrong in the most indirect way, by using “admittedly” in conversation a billion times. Jerk.) but I always check to make sure I’m saying the right thing.

I thought people say “hot damn” instead of “damn hot” – that’s my take on it. Well it could be an Australian thing? I really don’t know. I hear it said with expression like, “That girl is hot damn!”

    So… I really don’t know. O_O

LOL, so it’s ten minutes more… I was thinking, hmm, no big deal. But you volunteered and they’re having all these rules when you have to be there and have to turn up? Volunteering shouldn’t be like that. You should be able to come in when you are available and when you have the time. It’s not like a job. That doesn’t really seem fair. They should have at least told you when they expect you to be there, then you volunteer if you are available and can make the times.

Free is good. :D Very Asian. XD

8am-3pm… our school days were from 8:45am-3:10pm. O_o

LOL I’m sure Jimmy will respect your wishes. :)

Oh, well at the proms and things here, you can have a short dress if you want! Both of mine were long. I kind of liked them! But I hated holding them up sometimes; even with heels they dragged on the floor. I had someone step on my dress at my first prom (year 10), and at my last one (year 12) it got stuck on my shoe. Fun… not.

Haha! We had graduation then prom. ;~; I think I felt like I had a lot of friends then, but now I couldn’t care less. :P

Found a typo in your comment: dont’
    :P

Nope, I don’t straighten my hair. xD It’s really not my thing. :P My friend got her hair chemically straightened. I don’t know why people do it so regularly… it seems terrible to straighten your hair all the time. :( And sometimes if you straighten it so much it looks… I don’t know; fake?

    You should go! :O :)

Yeah that’s true haha. We weren’t allowed to bring anyone outside of our own grade. So… yeah. People were asking me (when I still went out with that blonde guy) if they were going to let me take him to prom. He was like… some three grades younger… ROFLMAO I’m such an idiot.

I think I have five now, because I have received a few comments since I stopped. It seriously is never-ending.

Unfortunately no. My credit still keeps going up and down. So annoying. I just hope it doesn’t reach zero. I’m trying not to let it annoy me. :)

Ugh fuck. I don’t know about church but my brother had better move his fucking sorry ass. I have a lot of chores to do so maybe after this comment I’ll have to do them. Sucks. I mustn’t feel like I’m ever wasting time online… people are dicks if they think I return their comment too late. SO YEAH.

He should just pay you every hour you do instead of at the end. ;|

Eww I sure hope his kid doesn’t turn out like him! He sounds so demanding and the way he just ignores your questions… what does he expect? :|

Ahh yeah. I was told in history that it was some form of blasphemy. I usually say it in real life out loud without thinking, but when I write, I write “goodness” instead.

I think it’s a bit odd because my parents keep fighting a lot. It’s hard to look at it in a sweet way haha.

I jumped on my computer straight away this morning. I made my bed (because I always do!) and I didn’t even open my door; I just turned my laptop on. Sometimes I am too lazy to go to bed too. What the heck. I just want to watch a video or something.

Ahaha I had cavities when I was young, but now not anymore. My teeth are pretty good. I hate my breath smelling like crap though, so I brush before I go to bed. I also hate waking people up too! :O

I’m the opposite though; I usually can’t be bothered in the morning. I eat and then I get lazy. Especially when I’m staying at home. If I’m going out, though, I brush my teeth. :)

LOL I hope the grapes worked. I sure didn’t feel fresh but no one said my breath stunk or anything or whatever… LOL.

Ooh I know what you mean. I used to brush before eating. Then I realised it didn’t make sense. But the thing that sucks is that I can’t brush too soon after eating because I feel like I’m going to puke.

All this talk is making me feel bad for not brushing my teeth this morning. :|

I always shower once a day at night… but in the mornings I always wash my face. xD

I really hate it when my parting in my hair goes wonky. I don’t want it to stay in a funny place all the time so I always try and fix it. My hair just goes in my face when I’m sleeping. Yay. :P I just leave it out.

LOLOLOL. You know what haha… It wasn’t intentional that I called Mick Jagger a grape. A grape was the first thing that came to mind and I didn’t realise I had mentioned it in my blog earlier. XD

I always remember Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. :)

ROFLMAO. Ben is like… 8 or 9 years older than me now. Maybe I’ll start looking away when he’s in his mid 30s. D: But he’s still hot now! LOL.

YEPPPP. I had to mention Neverfly. You should add more stuff to To Dust. 8D 8D

  3. Janice says:

I’m also very keen about grammar, even though English is not my first language so I can’t use proper grammar xD But I really love it when reviewing someone’s site and I will end up correcting every single grammatical mistake. Though my grammar is not good, but well I love doing it xD

Those ‘legit’ and ‘hot mess’ word are wrongly used these days. I found some people who misuse them too. Sometimes those people make me think, what are they actually saying? LOL. They have their own meaning for those words :squint:

Aw, volunteers are volunteering, so they only do what they want to do when they have a spare time. It’s ridiculous if volunteers are given the exact time to come and it’s a “must”. Weird. :sus:

  4. Tiffany says:

Ahh, my unrealistic goal. That would to become a lawyer and graduate at the top university of law in Australia. This would require me to get 99.65 in my HSC (Higher School Certificate), which means I need to be in the top 0.35% of Australian students.

Theoretically that sounds virtually impossible let alone practical. I suppose I could always go to a less prestige university, but I’ve just always dreamed of attending that university. Maybe I’m just being a pessimist.

I completely know what you mean! I myself am a bit of a ‘Grammar Police’, and I have trouble understanding some slang nowadays. If you didn’t explain what that sentence involving “legit” meant, I never would of understood it xD
Gosh, I also hate it when people say “brang” instead of brought, and “gonna” instead of “going to”. Maybe I’m just paranoid? xD

When I have trouble with slang I tend to look it up on urbandictionary.com, though a lot of idiots put up vulgar meanings. O_O

Maybe the person who said you “must” just made a poor choice of wording? Well I hope you’ll have fun at the carnival anyway, and enjoy your new t-shirt. ^D^

  5. Amanda says:

Yikes, I’m glad “legit” hasn’t caught on around here – but I hated the whole “that’s sick!” or “bad!” or “mean!” in terms of describing something as being cool or awesome… I mean, how the heck was I supposed to differentiate between something being “bad” and “bad”?! ><

As for the volunteering thing… I hate when they do that as well – you're completely right, volunteers shouldn't be *told* what time they "must" be there, to do what. After all, you're all giving up your time and efforts for free, without asking for anything in return (albeit the free tshirt), so what right do they have to order you the times which you HAVE to be there?! That would piss me off too :/

  6. Mallory says:

Well, if y’really want these sorts of words/phrases to make sense, just file them under ‘slang’ in your mind! That’s what the Dictionaries do. xD

I agree that saying ‘This ice cream is so legit’ isn’t grammatically correct, but if you think about it in a ‘newfangled slang’ sense, then it makes it easier to handle, LOL.

I don’t like the whole ‘hot mess’/'hot damn’ thing, either … But that’s only because I think it sounds kinda white-trashy, y’know? Like something someone from a trailer park would say, LOL … Not to be a bitch, because I know I shouldn’t stereotype all people who live in a trailer home, but I’m sure you understand what I’m getting at. :P

And yay, I’m excited you’ve blogged again! D’you think you’re gonna keep it up, or did you just post this to shut everyone up …? :P ((Including me? x3 ))

  7. Isa says:

Ah late reply but I’m glad my comment was encouraging for you, my friend did not want to go to prom because of the preparations – the dress, make-up & hair. She thought people would go all out with their looks and she was also skeptical about having fun, she thought she would end up sitting down instead of dancing. Another reason was that she was insecure because her best friend always grabbed all the attention and that she would end up just tagging along. But the dance turned out to be completely different. She came simple and grabbed even more attention than her friend, she never stopped dancing and she left there saying it was one of the best nights of her life. We all ended up screaming “I told you so!” at her, even though we were really unsure in the beginning as well.

I can’t say I am a grammar freak but I do try to type understandable English language. I don’t really use slangs, so much new slangs keep coming out, its difficult to understand what people are even saying. I’ve never really heard the ‘legit’ one before but the hot damn slang I know. I think you would be irritable if you heard the way some people speak in my country, not everyone speaks dialect but a lot of us too especially teenagers. Dialect is part of out culture, its always surprising to hear someone from our country speaking proper English. Sometimes even the pronunciation of our words can be different, but most of us use dialect among people we are comfortable with.

Its not right for volunteers to be ordered to come at a specific time, or that they must stay for the two shifts. Its your free time that you’re using to help them out. They should have been more considerate and tell people the times before they volunteered. Well I hope you still have fun at the carnival :)

  8. Grysh says:

Hmm, I barely use the word ‘legit’ so thank god. Haha. :D

Can’t help you out with the ‘hot’ thing. I’m also confused on that one.

It’s really nice of you to volunteer. Just have fun with it. As you said, you do get a free shirt ;)

  9. nancy says:

Sometimes, I don’t like the volunteer rules that are forced upon optional work. They might as well pay the volunteers if they’re going to have uptight rules. But then again, this is volunteer work! So…

I’m usually bothered by frequent poor grammar. Even though I have bad grammar myself, but I’m trying to improve on it. Haha, sometimes, I’m bothered by it. I use a lot of slangs because of my habits ): .

I transferred the windows 7 files into the USB. But the desktop doesn’t allow XP to upgrade directly to 7. :( ! I`ll figure this out some day ;D ! Soon!

I’m going to prom for sure with my friend. I’m not going to expect too much :) ! I’m tempting to use a hollister dress-outfit, but then it’s a formal dance. :)

  10. Tj says:

I think i have bad grammer :( sorry lol. I can’t spell for my life either.. i guess i fail at the english language. Well even more for the French Language. Maybe if i use sign language it would be better lol

idk why people say legit all the time haha, i usually say legit in a joking way haha, idrk haha it’s complicated. haha i dont really think before i talk. aka i am very blunt…

And i think the term “hot mess” means that you look good when you are hott? haha idk maybe we should all listen to Cobra Starships song, hot mess. haha maybe someone could learn what it means? haha nah im kidding, but yea i think hot mess means that you are attractive when you dont look your best.

and mhm i think it would be more reasonable if you guys choose your hours, because some people can’t always do it, idk maybe they do not have enough volunteers though? anyway good luck waking up early haha.

and i want to do NHS, my fear is not making it :( they keep raising the GPA, i hope it’s not like higher then a 4.0 before i graduate :(

    ***
I’ve been taking practice test for the SAT and ACT, and i always get a headache after. lol Do you know where you are going to college? Did you take SAT Subject test? There’s so much stuff to think about haha, at least you are pretty much done. Lucky you lol Is Senior year sad though? I probably would never visit my HS after i graduate.

I remember i use to think that 16 was such a cool age, i would be SO pretty and have a boyfriend, and like have good grades. My parents would like let me do what i want. haha but yea it’s not really like that. haha It’s funny how glorious we thought being 16 was. I remember when i was younger then 10, when i played house i would always wanted to be 10 cause it was double digits. lol

With being 20, i think i am going to ask my friend who is 27, he recently got engaged, and i want to know what he thinks of his life now rather then then.

and i am 15, turning 16 in May.

and thanks, those pages are probably never going up lmfao

  11. Simone says:

Lol, I don’t think I have met anyone like you :p Even my teachers use slang, English teachers at that. There is a time to joke around and using slang and stuff but then there is also the time for you to be professional.

I use the word legit in those instances. I think because its probably cooler and easier to say maybe? There is a difference between being a mess and being a hot mess but I can’t explain. Being a hot mess is far more worse though.

Your only a volunteer so I think that’s wrong. If they want to tell you what time to be there then they should add you to the payroll.

    -

I’m not happy that high school is passing before my eyes for multiple reasons. As much as I want to be an adult and take on the real world I don’t want to rush my teenage years because I won’t ever be able to live them again.

Hehe, I hope I get to go to prom before my time. I dont really know the rules, I know you can go if a senior asks you but I;m sure there are other ways because some girls went last yaer.

My mom has done far more than I can expliain. My dad has hurt me too but he isn’t around so it doesn’t affect me.

  12. jeniffer says:

I’m not really good in english, since I’m living in a country which– english is just our 2nd language. But I tried my best to delivered my message in a clear manner. Actually the first time I heard “hot mess” was in American Idol last week. Ellen was using it to describe the song sang by this contestant. I understand it though, but I actually have 2nd thoughts since I don’t know of there is really “hot mess” in the dictionary. So yeah, I understand english very much, but sometimes a used of certain word that is new to my ears really made me “should I use that word too? is that word existing?”.

  13. Gel says:

I hate it when people show off that they know a lot of “deep” words in English yet use it the wrong way. Sheesh. I’d prefer people using simple, direct to the point words instead of being such a know it all and just embarrassing themselves, no? It’s just funny when the sentence was structured like “ohhh my parents are so legit” hahaha riiight -_- It’s ridiculous! I’m somehow a grammar freak as well and if I witnessed that, i’d surely be laughing! HAHA.

  14. Erin says:

I completely understand. I mean I wasn’t a “grammar Nazi” until one of my old friends got me typing on instant messanger correctly. I mean I’d be typin lik dis and i wouldnt care about punctuation or any of that crap. Yeah, I was bad. I mean I don’t even remember half of what I typed. OH YEAH! I used, idk and idr and idc a lot. I still do that but not as much since Dante doesn’t know what they mean. He’s pretty much the only one I talk to on FB instant messanger. :)

“hot mess” and “hot damn” are phrases for saying someone is hot. I don’t understand it I just say hott and type it with two T’s cuz I’m cool like that aka I’m a hott mess. XD Sorry, I had to use it.
I guess you could say that my aka’s are like “hot mess”, “legit”, and “hot damn”. I use that to rephrase something. I’m just like, “Did you do the hw? aka Can I get the answers from you?” I do that everywhere. It’s become a habit. Hahahaha. Odd right?

Yeah, they shouldn’t tell you but if they don’t you may not know when to show up and most people wouldn’t volunteer or should I say, less people would volunteer. I mean I’d be like you, I have to volunteer next year to get 70 hrs of comunity service for a scholarship for college. I currently have like 40-45 hrs but I have to start from scratch. :/ It really sucks. :( Oh well. :)
    _______________________________________________
Oh, that was our prom theme last year, I think. :/ This year-I just remembered-our prom theme is Arabian Nights. Idk how I can get a dress to match that but it doesn’t matter because I already have a dress. :D

woops. My bad. Typos SUCK! Hahahaha.

Really? Good luck for rain at a wedding? Never heard that before. :)

I hope so. Time will tell, Time will tell. :)

  15. Krystal says:

I’ve never heard anyone replace “cool” with legit before. I only heard the word “legit” use in MMO when players say they have obtained their items fairly and wasn’t from a hack.

Never hear of “hot mess” or “hot damn” Have heard of “damn hot” tho!

  16. Janice says:

Thanks! ^D^ Your words encourage me to learn English by heart. I still have four years until I study abroad so I will use those time to master my English.

I find lots of spelling mistakes when reviewing. Some people are just too lazy to write and they end up writing ‘sumthing lyk diz’. Um well those are not well-written with correct spelling xD Some people know about that but they keep on doing the same mistake because they think that kind of spelling is cool. Some friends of mine think that way -_- -_-

Yeah it was written on the instruction that Clue should be played by 3-6 people. That’s why I have never played it because I only have one brother at home, so we don’t have another person to make us three xD

She bought me cheese cake ^.^ I love it so much! My tongue used to dislike it when I was little, but now I’m so addicted to it LOL.

I’m wearing braces right now. he dentist said I have wide jaw so he had to pull out four teeth. I got all my four teeth plucked already. No more pain for me! xP

  17. Georgina says:

    I’m going to fly through your comment. I’m kind of tired… but I wanted to respond, of course! It’ll be a bit of a shit reply. D;

Yeah, I thought it was funny hahah. Well actually, the reason I was laughing at the tags is because mine are just has hilariously ridiculous. Why, you ask… well, the other day I was reading an article about categories and tags and how tags are not as important as categories and sometimes not even necessary, since most of the words in the tags are just mentioned in the post anyway. (Right?) So it amused me that the tags were just repeated bits of the blog… okay totally dude, mine are like that too but it made me laugh. Weird me.

Haha yeah, I know people make mistakes and all but I sort of prefer to be corrected. Maybe because I’m a Nazi myself, so I prefer to do it the blunt way? :/ I like being corrected if I am wrong of course, so long as it isn’t blatantly rude.

Hmm yeah it might just be there. In Australia people say “hot damn” for hot chicks or something. :S

YAY! I’m glad it went alright. Free shirts FTW too. And that’s so cute how they remembered you! ;3

Yeah hahah… 9:00 is the perfect time to start… not. I got to uni at 8:00 though, as usual.. since it is more convenient to take both my brother and I to the station at the same time.

Silly Jimmy. If he got nasty about the robotics team being at dinner and him not minding (Jimmy if you’re reading this, you are mean and you should apologise to Rachel… please? ^^ <3)… better hope like hell that he'll respect you don't want those dumb corsages. ROFL.

Eww that's just too bad! Pink and red/black/white… not cool. Oh well, it was just a mistake!

James and I tried to match our prom outfits… I think we did an *okay* job. Could have been better I guess. I'm glad I didn't change my mind last minute and wear my brown and blue dress. Would have looked drastic. XD

Ooh well pick a long one anyway, I think long dresses are prettier. Bad thing is that you can't see your shoes. :P Not very much anyway.

Haha nope! We had our graduation as a morning ceremony. And I think we discovered that it's different since we graduated before our external exams, and then our prom was after all that. 8D So they were about a month apart. Odd.

Our prom didn't have all those afterparties and random shit. :P Some people chose to have them but my friends and I were like… "meh"… and yeah, you shouldn't bother going either. Lame. :P Just go home and sleep. It's a big night in itself. Who the hell wants to get drunk and jazz about after dancing…? At least that's what they do here…

YOU MUST GO. Otherwise I'll send you all my photos and make you jealous of EVERYBODY. Not just me. LOOOL.

Yeah like we discussed, it was weird dating a younger guy, obviously because it's weird when the girl is older. My first boyfriend Danny was younger by a few days. Funny that. :P We were still the same age generally though, and no one noticed. O_o XD

I have about 25 comments after this – all on the new blog. You are lucky last! But I am still behind – 25 is a lot. Yuck. Maybe I'll get more done after this and before sleeping? Short ones maybe…?

Haha, it is amusing telling each other how many comments we have left. More comment racing next time!

I know what you mean. When I look at it from other people's points of view, they don't think I take a while to respond, even though I think they do.

But then when THEY respond a little late, I notice it's a day later but I don't even mind. Heh. So long as they don't ignore my comments completely. Gee, some people.

    Well, it's still money you're getting! :D

I think I say "oh my God" aloud too. D:

Oh I see hahaa. I usually pee in the mornings but if I don't need to, I'll go on my computer. My ears are usually okay in the morning lol. I clean them like every few days though… xD

Yeah, I know what you mean! I sometimes brush my teeth a lot later into the day, when my mouth just feels downright gross. "It's time". XD

Haha I like going to bed clean so I shower at night. Odd. If it's hot weather I shower in the mornin gtoo.

Oh I seee. I figure that if I clip my hair back when I sleep, I'll roll around and my hair will touch my face anyway. But… random… I like my pillow. 8D

It's funny when you try to recall a song but you're listening to music. That happens to me too much. xP

HAHA. I wonder if Ben will be hot when he's 40 though… :P

    YAY end comment~

  18. Joyce says:

I hear you! On everything in your blog! ^_^

I read the word “legit” so many times in your blog, that the word has lost all meaning to me, LOL! You know how that can happen, especially with names. You repeat it over and over in your head or out loud and then the meaning just becomes obsolete.

I’ve always been really good at grammar and spelling so I’d have that “seriously, you don’t know the difference between ‘their’ and ‘there’ ?!” It’s a very snotty attitude, but I never boast about it. It’s hard for some people, and that’s fine. Anything scientific is hard for me so ;P

LOL Harry’s brother is the worst speller in the world. He’s like brilliant when it comes to chemistry, but completely thick when it comes to writing, spelling, grammar, and conventions. He was telling me a story about how one time he and 3 other friends were talking about their middle names, and the spelling of his middle name (Arthur) came up. He said it was spelled A-R-T-H-E-R and they were like “what ? I’ve never heard of Arthur being spelled with an E.” So he called his mom and asked her for the correct spelling, which was in fact ARTHUR not ARTHER. I responded, “Haha wow that’s funny. This was like what, first grade?” His reply, “No, last year.” Last year in the story was his junior year of college -___-

I hate when charities and volunteer programs are tense and run like a greedy dictatorship. The point of them is the value the quality of giving and selflessness, but when it comes to something that needs to get done…those qualities suddenly are put on the back burner. Not cool. I don’t have much respect for charities or organizations that operate in such a fashion.

I’m at school right now and I have to go home like NOW so I’m gonna finish this comment later. Haha ok bye <3

It’s good to have correct grammar :) I don’t get a lot of the slang nowadays! Makes me feel old. I teach drawing classes to a bunch of kids privately and sometimes they will start using words I’ve never even heard of. Apparently it’s the new lingo? I can’t think of any off the top of my head lol. But yeah I have heard so many people use the word “legit” in the wrong context it’s annoying.

My uncle received an MBE from the Queen at Buckingham Palace! But that was a few years ago now. They even made him a special dvd of the event that he got to keep! :)

And yep, so far I seem to be sticking with the whole “blogging once a week and returning all comments” thing :) hehe you learnt some pinyin! You can say it to me because I know a little Mandarin myself even though my mother tongue is Cantonese ^_^

    Take care!! xx

  20. Kayt says:

yeah, I hope they do give me a little more trust, I don;t know why they don’t anyway. Probably because I’m the youngest and I’m a girl- its really annoying. They can’t protect me from everything in life.
Yeah, I mean for me, I see no point in spending a ton of money on prom, i don’t get the whole hype about it. It’s just a dance and in my life, usually ends up horrible- people crying, people breaking up, people stealing others guys/girls- pointless lol.
I know, I’ve finally realized that shes not a true friend- she would ditch me for guys- any time a guy was around she’d be more interested in talking to him than with me even though she invited me lol. But whatever, I’m over it.
I know lol, its not like my eyes are tiny slits, I do it just a little and to make sure its not messy- who wants to go out with mascara all over their eye lids? not me.
I did confront her lol, and that’s why we are no longer friends. I guess she felt the need to block me from everything when I wasn’t the one doing the mean things- I just told her to stop it.

I hate slang as well, and I hate when people use short form of words for the most part. I’m not a perfectionist when it comes to grammar, but I should be. I don’t want to walk around speaking and writing wrong- my blogs don’t help me to get better either lol.
I don’t understand hot mess either- maybe the person is ‘hot’ but their dressed messy? LOL no idea!
Oh wow, your right- I mean, your volunteering time out of your life for this, you shouldn’t have to spend the whole day there. You should be able to let them know when and how long you can- typically that’s what volunteering means. Especially for not getting paid, you should have the right to pick and choose yourself

  21. Kerry says:

Haha, Rachel, this made me laugh because I get exactly the same. I keep seeing Facebook groups and their grammar is appalling. I always think that I might’ve joined it if it made sense.
I can get really anal about grammar and spelling. I constantly have a go at my sister for it. One time she was writing an essay for her English GCSE and I noticed how bad her grammar and punctuation was so I picked up her paper and rewrote the entire thing! =/ What a dork, lol.

I’m not great with all this slang. I live in South East London which is kind of known for it’s ‘gangsta’ speak. I always get people saying things to me and I’m like… WHAT?! :S I found a Facebook group called ‘Are you dizzy blad?… no thank you, my balance is perfectly adequate’… JOIN! :D haha!
People always say things like ‘yeah blud, safe’ or ‘that’s dark, bruv’ and I don’t have a clue what they’re going on about. One time this kid told me that something was ‘sick’… to me, sick is a bad thing but it turned out he was telling me how good something was. Very confusing…

I guess I’m not ‘down with the kids’ anymore. lmao.

  22. tiff k says:

Haha the freebies are usually what I look for when I volunteer! HAHA XD kidding!

Aww I agree that they should have posted a time or something and just assigned you based on free time.

I’m okay with slang because I invent words and even make up my own slang sometimes. It’s just an expression for a person but when everyone starts using it… I get so annoyed too.

I’m a grammar freak too but I guess not as much as you though :D

  23. Amanda says:

Haha thanks, I sure hope so ! XD

Whoa 12 elementary schools? Ah, that’s so many, but then again, you guys have multiple high schools and middle schools. That’s pretty cool though. There must be a lot students!

Haha really? That’s so cool. Yeah, getting into the routine is always hard. That’s why Monday’s are horrible XD

Oh that’s cool. When did you guys start school? I would love to get out of school around May. During June, it’s so hot, and our school doesn’t provide air conditioning in the classrooms, so it’s boiling.

Haha, yeah, I just hope you have a good experience with it. Even if it isn’t amazing, at least you gave it a try (:

Haha I think she’s more tomboyish then girly. She does wear skirts, but not a lot. She never wears pink, aand she doesn’t like all of those name brand clothes.

loll yeah it’s pretty popular. I think not just because of the Haiti relief fund, but also how everyone just got together to sing the song. You should definitely listen to it, it’s really good and inspiring! You’re welcome :D

Actually, on I think Wednesday, my teacher told us that they decided not to take a day off. Apparently we have enough days [we need at least 180 days of school] so they don’t have to take it off! We were all like “SERIOUSLY?” But it’s cool they did that :D Hopefully we don’t get any more snow days ! I live in New York, and we get a decent amount of snow every year. This year though, it’s been like so much more then normal. Usually they are able to clear the roads quickly because the town is prepared for any big storms, but sometimes it’s so much, they can’t clear it in time.

Aww thanks :D Haha, she went crazy in the snow! She would like walk in the snow, walk out, walk back in, and she would continue that for like 5 minutes LOL

Ahh I love banana bread ! I love all of those kinds of desserts. I’ve never tried honey cake! I should ask my mom to find a recipe for it.

LOL what’s a fake cheese casadia? XD

Haha I’m not a grammer freak, but I do get annoyed when people use words like “legit” incorrectly as well. I say “legit” a lot, but I use it correctly. I’m not that good when it comes to grammer though XD. I also hate when people say “I think I did good on my test.” I think it’s because I’ve been hanging around with my sister too much who always is correcting me when I make this mistake, but now I understand. It’s rubbing off of her ! XD

Aww that’s nice of you for volunteering. They should let you pick your own hours. Haha, ohh I’m in NHS [actually since I'm in middle school it's NJHS, but same idea XD] and when we have events that we help out with, we get assigned hours. But I agree with you, we should pick our hours. Sometimes we want to help, but we have a conflict so we can’t always be there the whole time. Especially if you have long hours which in your case, you do. Thankfully, I already got the 10 hours I need :D Hah, free t-shirt ! ;]

  24. Tiffany says:

Ah the thing is I want to go to a top university! I am asking so much from life, but I feel as if I’m giving it my all. I have already vowed myself to do more community service after graduation. Let’s just hope I will definitely put this into practice.

Yeah we have the same rule. Pedestrians have the right of way! He could of seriously run over us. And with a lot of witnesses in the bus!

I think the people at the blood bank are afraid that you have a sexually transmitted infection or something or rather. They are very strict with who can donate blood, which is ironic in a way because only a small number of people choose to donate in the first place. My friend couldn’t donate blood because she was taking medication for her skin, and she needed to wait 12 months the medication to get out of her bloodstream I think.

D: my survey kept on asking if I’ve been to Britan between this period of time (can’t seem to remember it), because I think it was during the industrial revolution or something and there was a lot of toxins in the air. They kept on asking about my parents as well because they were born overseas o_O

Ahh, giving blood isn’t that bad I promise. The people there are really friendly (well..except for the guy who interviewed me. He was friendly in a different way). Sucks that your friend couldn’t donate because she didn’t weigh enough D: I guess she’ll just have to eat more before donating to build up a kilo or two xD

    Ahh thank you! :)

  25. Meredith says:

OOOOOH, I’m the same way with grammar. I mean, mine isn’t always perfect but I always HAVE to use the right you’re/your, or their/there/they’re. Most of my friends don’t even know the difference, and it’s so painful to look at their writing o.O One of my friends had a facebook status today about ‘getting on you’re knees’ … I just couldn’t resist commenting with the proper your.

  26. Kourtni says:

I’m a grammar freak as well! I also go crazy when people use the word ‘legit’ in incorrect ways.

  27. Lady Impulse says:

Haha I understand what you mean about the uses for “legit,” “hot mess,” and “hot damn” because I never understood them myself. But I would be a hypocrite if I said I don’t use them in that way. Sometimes things just make sense in the way that you say them, so whatever word or phrase you use doesn’t have to be correct in the question of diction. I am Jewish too and I remember going to Purim carnivals when I was younger. My mom would make me a costume and everything.

  28. Becca says:

People are absolutely destroying the English language with slang and bad grammar. And believe me, you’re not the only one that hates it! Even some of the poems we have to research for our English GCSEs have incorrect grammar and spelling (and most of it ISN’T deliberate :/ )

I really don’t understand how “legit” can possibly mean “cool”.. and how does “hot” even make sense in those sentences? D:

Eep, that’s early. Good luck with the carnival! That’s pretty rude that they boss you about, when you aren’t getting paid for it, but I guess if they need people to work specific hours, they have no choice. :(

When you said NHS, I thought you were talking about the Health Service we have here in Britain, and I got really confused, until I hovered and it said about the Honor Society thingo. ;)

HOW CAN YOU FORGET ABOUT THE RETRACTABLE? that was nearly a year ago, actually! Cause it was when we first got her and we called her a heshe, and we got her almost a year ago <3

I am planning the icon a day now! :D I am going to do it on a subdomain, though, because I really don't have the patience / time / money to use a domain, and I feel like subdomains are so much less stress! :)

I DID! I've watched most of the classics now! I just have Bambi left on my list :P The Little Mermaid is such an amazing film though, I loved it!

    RUGRATS = <3

Oooh, I see! I thought you meant it was wierd because you'd been there or something :P I never realised that Disney films are all in imaginary places before, actually! Although, thinking about it, some of them have to be. I mean you can't base a film about mermaids and talking fish in a real place, exactly, can you? :P

Some of them aren't too expensive, actually! Mine was £40 (reduced from £115, though) on asos.com, but my friend got hers from abroad and it only cost her £50! You should try looking online, because the stores are more expensive than websites!

YOU HAVE TO GO PROM! You can't not go. I won't let you. I will get a plane, hunt you down and drag you there in your pyjamas if I have to. You're going, 'k? :)

  29. AnneMarie says:

HAHAHAHA, I miss your blogs, Rachel. Really, I haven’t read one in such a long time and I forgot how you have this uncanny ability to find the most interesting topics.

I don’t like using the word legit. People just started using it this year and I’m like, that didn’t make sense. I think about that too, although I wouldn’t call myself a grammar freak but a grammar fail. Haha, passive voice is my downfall plus… phrasing anything. More than half the things I say turn out wrong. :/

A hot mess versus a mess. Well, my friends used to use it to call themselves a hot mess. It’s supposedly ironic. Like, your a mess but in a “sexy” kind of way. Hahaha, we’d just laugh it off and continue with our day.

I’ve never heard the term.. hot damn. That’s new.

And I agree, volunteering is something you do out of the kindness of your heart. You shouldn’t be forced to be there a certain time and all if you’re just volunteering. I don’t know, depends on how you look at it. I wouldn’t mind though.

And I’d return your comment, but its been so long. I figured I’d start a new comment conversation. ^^
